The Palace belongs to the protected area of Saint Andre Church and was built upon the foundations of the romanic gothic castle of Mafra, later the Cerca medieval Palace.
It is an austere building from the 17th century, designed by the royal architect Diogo Marques Lucas, that preserves in its simple lines the epoch’s architecture character.
The period of greatest blaze of this house, which loomed the Marquises’ library, the salons with paneled ceilings and the chaple ornamented with an altarpiece by sculptor Machado de Castro, was the first half of the 18th century.
D. João V settled regularly in this Palace during his travels to Mafra to inspect the actual work on Mafra National Palace.
